The Japanese sweet, Yakiimo (sweet potato)
We have lots of national sweets in Japan like dango, manju, dorayaki, yo-kan, taiyaki.... OK, countless.
But one of the most simple Japanese sweets is yakiimo (baked sweet potato).
It is known that women have boundless appetite for yakiimo and funny thing is that they are hesitate to tell gentlemen that they love it.
Because sugar or milk is not used, it's so healthy and good for children's snack. This mild sweetness of the potato is loved by most of the Japanese women, no doubt.
-How to make
Just by baking sweet potato for 30 min. in the oven or toaster (not pop-up one), you can have a hot, soft and sweet potato.
My recipe is, bake a potato with the toaster about 30 minutes at 170℃. Turn over when 15 minutes past. Put a folk or spit on the surface of the potato, if it's soft enough, ready to eat.
Slowly heat potatoes so that sweetness will be stronger. That's why heating with microwave is not suited for this recipe.
-Why yakiimo now...?
Yakiimo is a seasonal sweet so we usually eat it in autumn and winter.
It's so nice to bite into it in a chilly cold day.
Now it's not autumn or winter but I found Naruto-kintoki at the supermarket and I couldn't stop imagining the flavor of yakiimo!
Today is rainy and a bit chilly, so it was suitable for yakiimo-day.
I baked the potato named Naruto-kintoki, one of the sweet potato varieties, and we enjoyed the creamy sweet taste withmy daughter.
(My husband said he was hungry so I suggested the rest of yakiimo, but he gently refused..Men are always like that! They are not interested in sweet potatoes usually.)
Also, there is another reason.
My daughter has bad teeth so she's better not to intake refined sugar at least during treatment.
Yakiimo is totally natural without refined articles and chemical seasoning.
Very good for health and teeth.
-Ishiyaki-Imo is the best
Ishiyaki-imo means Stone-roasted sweet potato which are usually sold at pushcart vendor.
You can see them (or you can hear them) in winter days. In my childhood, I remember I heard vendor's recorded tape from outside (they have a loud speaker).
Ishiyaki-imo is sweet because it is slowly baked with far-infrared radiation. Try it when you find them.
